How to Get the Most from Your Supplements
Supplements can be a valuable way to support your health—but only when used thoughtfully. Many people end up taking products they don’t need, following trends that don’t apply to them, or missing out on benefits because their body isn’t absorbing nutrients properly.
If you want to make smarter, more effective choices, it helps to step back and focus on what truly matters: personalisation, quality, and understanding how your body works.
More Supplements Don’t Mean Better Results
It’s easy to assume that adding more supplements will lead to better health. In reality, this often leads to unnecessary spending—and sometimes confusion about what’s actually helping.
Before introducing a new supplement, ask yourself:
- What specific goal am I trying to support?
- Is this something I truly need, or am I reacting to a symptom?
- Could I already be getting enough through my diet?
A simpler, more targeted approach is often far more effective. Starting with a few well-chosen supplements and building only when needed allows you to better understand what works for your body.

Personalisation Is Key
No two people have the same nutritional needs. Your ideal supplement routine depends on factors such as your diet, lifestyle, age, stress levels, and overall health. For example:
- Someone with a high-stress lifestyle may benefit from different nutrients than someone who is highly active.
- Nutritional needs can shift with age or life stage.
- Dietary habits (plant-based, restricted diets, etc.) also play a major role.
What works well for a friend, colleague, or influencer may not be relevant for you. Personalising your supplements ensures you support your body in a meaningful and efficient way—rather than following a generic approach.
Absorption Matters More Than You Think
Taking supplements is only part of the equation—your body also needs to absorb and use the nutrients effectively. Several factors influence absorption:
- The health of your digestive system
- The form of the nutrient (some forms are easier for the body to use): liquid, powder etc.
- Whether the supplement is taken with or without food
- Interactions with other nutrients

Some vitamins are better absorbed with fat, while others may compete with each other if taken together. If absorption is not optimal, even high-quality supplements may not deliver the expected results. Look for supplements which have absorbable forms like bisglycinate for zinc and magnesium and Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate (P-5-P) for Vitamin B6. Does your B12 have two different forms such as Methyl Cobalamin and 5′-Deoxyadenosylcobalamin. If you’re taking Vitamin K2, the form Menaquinone-7 (MK-7) has been shown to be more useful than MK-4.
