Want to give your immune system a boost?
The natural way to give your immune system the support it needs
When we start feeling run down, we often turn to short-term fixes to give our immune system a bit of a boost. There’s no doubt that the right supplements can help, but there really is no substitute for choosing good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. The truth is, we can’t simply flick a switch to fire up the immune system. A strong immune response is built day by day, through the small, consistent choices we make – what we eat, how much we move and how well we rest.

How does immunity work?
In the simplest terms, the immune system is a complex network of cells, tissues and organs that work together to protect the body from infection and disease. It identifies and eliminates harmful invaders like bacteria and viruses and also removes abnormal cells. It also ‘remembers’ previous pathogens, allowing for a quicker response when they are next encountered.
When the immune system isn’t functioning properly – often caused by varying degrees of stress, poor diet, lack of physical activity and poor-quality sleep – we become prone to a range of health issues including frequent colds, infections and slow healing wounds, as well as more serious conditions.

Our everyday choices are what really matter
The good news is that supporting your immune system is easy to do. By making small adjustments to your daily routine, eating well and ensuring we get enough sleep and regular exercise – you’ll give yourself the best chance to ward off the worst that winter can throw at you. Here are our eight top tips for giving your system the support it needs to keep you feeling healthy.
- Prioritise sleep. Getting a good seven to nine hours of sleep really does give your immune system a chance to reset – so set a regular bedtime routine and stick to it.
- At mealtimes, fill half your plate with colourful vegetables and fruits – they’re packed with antioxidants, vitamins C and A, and the phytonutrients your immune cells thrive on.
- Think eggs, beans, poultry, fish or tofu – protein in every meal is essential for repairing cells.
- Don’t forget healthy fats like olive oil, nuts seeds and oily fish that help reduce inflammation, and keep your immune system balanced.
- Load up on garlic, it works wonders for immunity. And don’t be stingy with ginger and turmeric too.
- Get some exercise – try to move your body most days, whether it’s a gentle walk or a bit of stretching, it will help with your circulation and immune cell activity.
- Stay hydrated! Even mild dehydration can make you feel more fatigued and slow down your body’s defences.
- Manage your stress. Just five minutes a day of deep breathing (or whatever you find relaxing) can help calm the nervous system and help you fight off pathogens.
Remember, you don’t have to do all of the above! But even introducing two or three of these ideas as part of your ongoing daily routine can make a big difference.

Where supplements can help
Clearly, it’s not always practical to make all the lifestyle changes you’d like to, and supplements can be helpful as a top up. Here are a few to consider:
- Vitamin D is especially helpful during the winter months when exposure to daylight is at its lowest level
- Vitamin C and Zinc can provide much-needed short-term support if you’re feeling run down
- Probiotics provide support for your gut microbiome (where you’ll find 70% of your immune system!)
And finally, fish oil plays a powerful role in supporting immune health. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, it helps regulate immune cell activity, reduce chronic inflammation, and strengthen your body’s first line of defence in the gut and respiratory system. These essential fats are incorporated into immune cell membranes, improving how cells communicate and respond to threats, while also helping white blood cells detect and fight pathogens more effectively.

Lifestyle first, supplements second
As we approach the colder, darker months, making just a few adjustments to your everyday routine – restful sleep, exercise, good nutrition and mindfulness – are the key ingredients you need to support your immune system. But if you need a little extra help, targeted supplementation can give you an extra boost too.
