How the detox process works

Your body is already an incredible detox machine. Every second, multiple systems work together to neutralise, process, and eliminate toxins you take into your body from your environment and from normal metabolic activity. When we support these systems through good nutrition, proper hydration, rest and movement, detox becomes both effortless and sustainable.

Let’s look at how it all works:

The liver: phase 1 & 2 detoxification

Your liver is your main detox organ — think of it as the body’s chemical processing plant. It handles everything from environmental toxins to excess hormones and medications.

Phase 1 (activation phase)

The liver uses enzymes (mainly from the cytochrome P450 family) to transform toxins into intermediate compounds. These can actually become more reactive at this stage, so your body needs antioxidants (like vitamins C, E, selenium, and glutathione) to neutralise them.

Phase 2 (conjugation phase)

Here, the liver attaches molecules such as sulfur, glycine, or glutathione to those toxins, making them water-soluble so they can be safely excreted via bile, urine, or sweat. Nutrients that support this phase include B vitamins, amino acids (from plant proteins), sulfur-rich foods (like garlic and broccoli), and leafy greens.

When both phases are balanced, your liver can efficiently filter and remove waste without creating inflammation or fatigue.

The kidneys – the bodys filters

Your kidneys filter your blood continuously, removing waste products and balancing electrolytes and fluid levels. Staying well-hydrated is essential for kidney function — you should aim for 1.5–2 litres of water daily (and more if you’re active or live in a warm climate). You can support your kidneys with fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbal teas like dandelion or nettle.

The lymphatic system – the bodys drainage network

Your lymphatic system runs parallel to your circulatory system and acts like your body’s internal cleansing ‘river’. It collects cellular waste, toxins, and excess fluids, then transports them to be eliminated. Unlike your heart, your lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump — it relies on movement and deep breathing to flow. You can support your lymphatic system through:

  • Gentle exercise, jumping or walking
  • Stretching or yoga
  • Dry brushing and staying hydrated

When your lymph flows freely, inflammation decreases and your immune system stays strong.

The digestive system – the elimination pathway

A healthy gut is essential for an effective detox. Your liver sends waste products into bile, which is secreted into the intestines and eliminated through stool. If digestion is sluggish or you’re constipated, toxins can be reabsorbed into the bloodstream. You can support your gut by:

  • Eating fiber-rich foods (vegetables, fruits, chia, flax)
  • Drinking enough water
  • Including probiotics or fermented foods for a balanced microbiome

Always remember this

Detoxing isn’t about forcing your body to do something new — it’s about supporting the natural systems already working for you. By giving your liver, kidneys, lymph, and gut the nutrients, hydration, and movement they need, you empower your body to thrive naturally.
