The science of our supplements

The health of our customers is at the heart of all our products.

The only way we can keep helping people to lead a healthier, happier life is to keep researching and innovating; so that our food supplements deliver the best quality nutrients in the most effective way. And science is at the heart of this.

Focused on delivering maximum benefit

Every day our product specialists bring their rigour and scientific expertise to our range of food supplements. Everything we’ve done for the past 30 years is benefit led, meaning we study the health requirements of people today when developing our advanced products. From biologically active substances to easily absorbable co-factors, we are constantly reviewing and revising our ingredients and extraction processes; to maximise every benefit that our supplements offer.

Your health is our motivation

Many of those who use our food supplements are either professional nutritional therapists, clients of these experts, or health-conscious people with a high level of understanding about their body and what it needs. Whatever your specific situation or need, first and foremost we encourage a healthy diet and lifestyle. On top of this, there are times when extra support can be useful. High quality formulations based on optimum extraction processes offer people the best opportunities to benefit from supplementation.

But, how do our products actually do it? What are the secrets inside our (food grade and recyclable) bottles?

The importance of biologically active forms

Ideally, our body is able to convert biologically ‘inactive’ substances into ‘active’ substances, and do so consistently. However, for some people this conversion doesn’t happen – or at least, not in the best way possible. This could be down to absorption problems, a lack of co-factors or hereditary metabolic diseases, for example. (A co-factor is a non- protein chemical compound that is bound to a protein and is required for the protein’s biological activity.) By supplementing bioactive forms with supplements such as VitOrtho’s, the body is served bite-sized nutrients that help to release the beneficial properties immediately.

In theory, we should be able to extract most ingredients from nature. The distinction between good and poor quality products is all about choice of ingredient; and how that ingredient is extracted or processed (because products need to be recognisable for the body to absorb it). That’s why we focus on using a bio-identical product. This means what we produce corresponds biochemically to its natural form, so it’s recognisable by the body, can be absorbed, and has no harmful effects.

Which mineral compounds are easily absorbed?

Inorganic mineral compounds (such as sodium, iron, calcium, magnesium) have a low absorption percentage (between 0 and 20%). They prevent proper excretion, causing digestive complaints and accumulation of the mineral in question. So just taking large doses of these minerals without checking if they are in the organic compound form can be problematic. Organic compounds have a lower elemental content, but are absorbed more easily (because minerals bound to an amino acid are more recognisable to the body).

At VitOrtho we choose organic mineral compounds such as citrate, bisglycinate, malate and taurate. For iron preparations, we always work with iron bisglycinate, knowing that other forms can cause constipation and even toxicity.

Why liposomal food supplements?

Research shows that liposomal food supplements are absorbed three to seven times better than other types. But how? In liposomal food supplements, the nutrients are ‘packed’ in tiny, fat-like globules, consisting of a double layer of phospholipids: called liposomes. This liposomal ‘packaging’ guarantees excellent absorption, and also ensures that the active ingredients enter the body’s cells faster and easier.

Additives, if needed, must be good quality

Additives are auxiliary substances that are added to products so that, put simply, they can be manufactured. (Another word for additives is ‘excipients’.) When it comes to additives like fillers, binders and preservatives, it’s important to choose supplements that use only the best auxiliary substances, which are not harmful to the body.

Unlike some supplement producers, VitOrtho’s food supplements use minimal filler – helping to improve the absorption of molecules into the body as quickly and effectively as possible.

Committed to quality in every way

Here, we’ve covered just some of the more scientific evidence into how VitOrtho takes your health seriously. Our rigour extends to the way our products are presented and packaged: from clean labels and recyclable bottles, to fair labelling and our supplements being GMO-free. So, as customers can now find in the UK, every VitOrtho product is filled with quality.

The only way we can keep helping people to lead a healthier, happier life, is to keep improving; to keep researching; to keep innovating; so that our food supplements deliver the best quality nutrients in the most effective way. And science is at the heart of this.
